What we do

We are proud to fund innovative and compelling journalism

The programme “Global Health Journalism Grants for Germany” is a project operated by the European Journalism Centre (EJC). The grant programme aims to advance creative reporting approaches, enabling a better coverage of international health, health policy and development related issues in German media. The grant intends to raise awareness about these topics in connection with German global health activities by supporting the production of stories that have a strong impact on media audiences in Germany.

From September 2016, when the first call was launched, until November 2017, 19 journalistic projects have been funded to report on global health in major German media outlets.

This particular project is run under the umbrella of the “Innovation in Development Reporting” grants programme which was launched in January 2013 by the EJC with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project rewards quality journalism and advances a new and distinctive agenda for development coverage through the award of funding to a selection of state-of-the-art reporting projects of great impact and high visibility. Since 2013, the programme has granted funding to 160 projects. In 2015, a first extension of the programme supported major European news organisations (for example Spiegel Online, Welt/N24, Dagens Nyheter, De Correspondent) in their efforts to run special sections dedicated to development cooperation.
