The Independent

United Kingdom

The Independent, nicknamed the Indy, is a British national newspaper published in London since 1986 and thus it is one of the youngest British national daily newspapers. Originally a broadsheet newspaper, the newspaper has been published in a tabloid or compact format since 2003 and in 2004 it was named National Newspaper of the Year at the British Press Awards. Free from political bias, The Independent newspaper is proud to live up to its name, with clear and forthright writing covering the whole range of UK and international news and opinion. In March 2014, it had an average daily circulation of 63,907, and the Sunday edition had a circulation of 100,549. On January 2008, The Independent relaunched its online edition, introducing a new look, better access to the blog service, priority on image and video content and additional areas of the site including art, architecture, fashion, gadgets and health. The paper launched Podcast programmes such as The Independent Music Radio Show, The Independent Travel Guides, The Independent Sailing Podcasts, and The Independent Video Travel Guides. Since 2009, the website has carried short video news bulletins provided by the Al Jazeera English news channel.
