Life Without Kidneys: How ready is Africa for the imminent NCD crisis?

An exploration of the kind of innovative thinking that will be needed to address the WHO’s prediction that non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease will be the leading cause of death in Africa by 2030.

The WHO predicts that non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease will be the leading cause of death in Africa by 2030. The continent’s healthcare systems are ill-equipped to provide the long-term care that is needed. We will examine a little-known but potentially transformative therapy for kidney failure, explore whether it might be a solution for places where thousands die for lack of dialysis, and consider whether it represents the kind of innovative thinking needed to address the coming crisis.
