Disabilities are a major factor for poverty. Clubfeet are common all over the world, but in developing countries kids often do not receive treatment. Their feet often prevent children from going, literally from walking to school and finish their education, sending them on the path to unemployment and poverty. This is completely preventable by surgery and/or using special braces over the course of several years.
We want to look at a German-Tanzanian partnership that has evolved over the course of 18 years to provide treatment to people with these kind of disabilities to see what type of help works and what is not sustainable. We will also look into possible causes for the bone deformations, from genetic mutations to nutrition deficiencies.
